Business Cards with QR Codes: Plan, Design and Test

Illustrative company business card layout with clearly arranged contact details

A printed business card and a QR code can work together: the card keeps your key details visible, while the code gives the recipient one clear next step. Choose that action before designing the card. A useful destination might be a portfolio, a contact page or a WhatsApp conversation.

Choose where the scan should lead

  • For a consultation or quotation: use a short contact page or your business WhatsApp link.
  • For creative work: show a small, relevant portfolio that loads well on a phone.
  • For a showroom: link to accurate visiting information if an in-person visit is the intended next step.
  • For a named employee: use a maintained profile or contact page, and confirm who will update it when details change.

Write a clear label beside the code, such as “View our work” or “Ask for a quote”. Keep a readable phone number, email or website on the card so scanning remains optional. Our business card content checklist helps you prioritise those details.

Keep the QR area clear

Use a dark code on a plain light background. Leave the surrounding clear margin free of text, patterns and borders. DENSO WAVE specifies a quiet zone four modules wide on every side of a standard QR code; a module is one of its small squares.

There is no single size that guarantees scanning in every layout. The encoded information, print quality and reader all matter. Reserve room for the code early and check the final artwork at the actual printed size, rather than shrinking it to fill a leftover corner.

Check the link as carefully as the design

Open the destination on a phone without signing into your own account. Can a new visitor see the intended page, understand the offer and contact you? Check the exact web address and remove any link that relies on your private preview or editing session.

If you use a third-party redirect service, check its terms: can the destination be changed, does the link depend on a subscription, and what happens if you stop paying? Keep ownership and renewal details with your artwork files.

Test before approving the print run

  1. Export the final artwork and print an actual-size proof.
  2. Scan with more than one phone under ordinary lighting.
  3. Check that the destination and the label agree.
  4. Test every unique code in a team order, not just the first employee's card.
  5. Ask about testing the selected stock and finish if they could affect the result.

A successful screen scan does not replace checking the printed result. Use the artwork preparation guide for the rest of your file checks.

Choose the card around the message

Start with standard business cards for a straightforward contact layout, or compare the business card finishes. Keep the QR area separate from decorative effects and ask the production team to review it before approval. For several employees, follow our team ordering guide.
