Digital vs Offset Business Card Printing: What to Ask

Illustrative standard business card company mockup on a white background

The useful question is not which printing method is always better. It is which production route suits your quantity, artwork, colour expectations and chosen finish. Start with those requirements, then ask the printer to explain the proposed method.

Separate the print run from the number of designs

A thousand copies of one card is a different job from ten employee designs with one hundred copies each. Tell the printer both the total and the quantity per name. Digital printing can suit short runs and personalised work; offset is often considered for larger repeated runs. There is no universal quantity at which one becomes cheaper for every job.

Use our team ordering guide to organise the names before asking for a price. Avoid choosing a method solely from a headline unit price that assumes one design.

Compare the finished card, not just the press

Request the same finished size, stock, printed sides and finish in each quotation. Check whether foil, lamination or another treatment is included, and whether it changes the production schedule. A quick printing stage does not guarantee the finished order will be ready immediately.

For a straightforward contact card, start with standard business cards. Use the finish comparison if you are also considering a special effect.

Explain colour and reorder expectations

If matching an existing card matters, provide a physical sample and the original artwork. Ask how colour will be assessed and what proof is available. Do not assume a screen preview, a different paper sample or a previous supplier's file guarantees an identical result.

For regular reorders, keep the approved specification and print file together. Confirm whether the same stock and production route can be used again; discuss any substitution before approving it.

Questions to include in your brief

  • Which method do you recommend for this quantity and number of names, and why?
  • What stock and finish does the price include?
  • What proof can I review before production?
  • Are artwork, setup, finishing, tax and delivery included?
  • When will the completed cards be ready after approval?
