Matte vs Gloss Laminated Business Cards: Choosing a Finish
Choose matte or gloss by looking at the card under the conditions in which it will be used. Gloss has a visibly reflective surface; matte gives a more subdued appearance. Neither label alone tells you how the finished card will feel, accept writing or show marks.
Look at the design under ordinary lighting
Place samples near a window and under office lighting, then tilt them while reading the contact details. Check whether reflections make important text harder to see. A photograph of a finish cannot show every lighting angle.
For image-heavy artwork, compare the printed colour on the actual candidate finishes. For a mostly typographic design, prioritise clear small text and comfortable contrast. Avoid assuming that the screen version predicts the final appearance.
Compare like-for-like samples
Try to compare the same artwork, stock and size with only the finish changed. If the samples use different papers or colours, separate those differences from the effect of the lamination. Ask whether the sample represents the finish currently available for your order.
If you want a softer tactile effect, read the soft-touch versus matte comparison. Our full finish guide also covers foil, UV and letterpress.
Decide whether the card needs a writable area
A matte appearance does not automatically mean the surface is suitable for handwriting. If you add appointment times, quotes or personal notes, test the intended pen on the actual sample. Let it dry and check for smearing before ordering.
See how to test writing on laminated cards for a simple check. Explain the writing requirement in your brief so the team can discuss a suitable construction.
Confirm the complete finish specification
Ask which sides will be laminated, whether the chosen finish works with any additional effect, and whether the price includes that combination. Confirm sample availability, handling expectations and production timing.
Lamination should not be treated as a promise that cards are waterproof, scratch-proof or permanently unchanged. Review the supplier's description for the exact material and ask questions about the way you will use it.
Start with the business card collection and send Laserco the finish you prefer, together with your artwork and quantities.
