Business Card Finishes: How to Choose the Right Option

Illustrative gold foil business card company mockup

Choose a business card finish around what you want people to notice: your information, a metallic detail, a soft surface, a glossy accent or an impressed design. There is no single best finish for every company. Start with your layout and how you use the card, then compare the options below.

This guide helps you shortlist a finish. To see the available products, visit our business card collection.

Which business card finish suits your design?

Standard printing: put the information first

Standard business card printing is a useful starting point for a clear logo, readable contact details and a consistent team layout. Keep the hierarchy simple: company, person, then the best way to contact them. Ask which paper and surface options are available before approving the order.

Gold foil: choose one detail to highlight

Gold foil business cards add a metallic accent. A simple logo, monogram or short company name can give the finish room to work. Avoid assuming that very fine lettering or every small detail can be foiled; have the intended foil area checked first. Metallic foil and printed gold-coloured ink produce different effects.

Velvet lamination: make the surface part of the design

Velvet laminated business cards focus on a soft-touch surface. Consider this option when the feel of the card matters as much as its graphics. A photograph cannot demonstrate texture, so ask about a physical sample. If you need to write appointment times or notes on the card, check writing suitability rather than assuming a laminated surface will work.

Before deciding, use the velvet business card sample checklist to assess feel, colour, handling and writing suitability.

UV: draw attention with gloss

UV business cards use a UV-cured coating. Confirm whether your quoted option covers the whole surface or selected areas. For a selective gloss effect, a logo or restrained pattern can create contrast; ask which artwork separation is needed and which areas are suitable.

Letterpress: let the impression carry the design

Letterpress business cards use a pressed impression. Uncluttered typography and simple shapes help the physical detail remain the focus. The paper and artwork affect the result, so request advice on the stock, fine lines and the expected impression before choosing this finish.

Compare quotes on the same basis

A low headline price means little if the quotes cover different quantities or finishes. Compare the finished size, paper stock and GSM, printed sides, quantity per name, finishing, artwork support, VAT and delivery. Ask for the production time after artwork approval as well as the delivery estimate.

GSM describes paper weight per square metre; it does not, by itself, tell you the exact thickness, texture or quality of a finished card. A sample is more useful than a weight number alone when judging feel.

Can I combine finishes?

Some effects can be combined, but availability and artwork requirements depend on the specific production setup. Ask about your intended combination before building the design around it. Do not assume every finish shown on separate product pages can be combined.
