How to Brief a Business Card Designer

Illustrative standard business card company mockup on a white background

A clear brief gives the designer the right information before layout begins. Send one checked set of contact details, the best available logo files and a short explanation of what the card should help the recipient do.

Start with the reader and the next step

Describe who receives the card and how they should contact you. A sales representative who wants a phone call may need a different emphasis from a studio directing people to a portfolio. Choose one main action so the design has a clear priority.

Use the business card content checklist to select the details. Submit the wording as editable text, with names, job titles and contact information already checked.

Provide a small, useful reference pack

  • Your original logo and brand colour or font references, if available.
  • The approved wording for each side and each language.
  • Two or three examples showing the style you like, with a sentence explaining what appeals to you.
  • The intended size and finish, or a request for help choosing them.
  • The number of names, quantity per name and required date.

References communicate direction; they are not permission to copy another company's design. If a logo is only available as a screenshot, say so at the start and ask whether redrawing is required.

Agree what the design work includes

Clarify whether the job is a new layout, an update to an existing file or print preparation only. Confirm the fee, number of proposed options, revision allowance and final files supplied. Ask separately about logo work, translation or additional employee versions instead of assuming they are included.

Read our artwork and design support page before sending files. Compare the business card options if the finish is still undecided.

Make feedback easy to apply

Nominate one person to combine comments. Refer to the exact version and identify each change clearly: for example, “back, phone line: replace the final four digits with …”. Avoid sending conflicting edits through several conversations.

Before approval, check the final exported file at actual size, both sides, all languages and every name. A design approval should identify the version being approved. Follow the print artwork guide for the technical checks.
